Tips for running in winter by Vienna-based Arthrowaves

Photo: © Moni Fellner.Last year, the Vienna-based sports medicine specialists, emergency surgeons and founders of Ordination Arthrowaves Dr. Stella Prosquill and Dr. Sabine Streubel gave professional tips for skiers like a special fitness programme before the holidays in the mountains and recommendations concerning the selection of slopes or the planning of ski tours with regard to weather conditions (article).

Now, the specialists for sports and accidental injuries, prepared a list with tips for runners, such as (a selection from the list):

  • Don't stop running in winter; keep up with the training on colder days up to minus 10° Celsius.
  • Indoor training for condition and strength is recommended once a week.
  • Warming-up the body and proper equipment (clothing, shoes) for minus degrees can prevent injuries. It's recommended to slow down the pace at the last five minutes of the running session for better regeneration of muscles and tendons.
  • Shoes with a proper profile and lower running speed can prevent slipping on slushy snow and ice. The surgeons have experienced an increasing amount of hand injuries in winter caused by the risky underground.

(Not mentioned here are special medical tips such as advice for runners with problem zones like the Achilles tendon, etc.)
