Tips for preparing the body for skiing by Vienna-based sports medicine specialists, emergency surgeons and founders of Ordination Arthrowaves

Knees are the most endangered parts of the body when it comes to skiing. The physical weakness of knees is caused by the carving-technology with its shorter and more revving skis, explain sports medicine specialists, emergency surgeons Dr. Stella Prosquill and Dr. Sabine Streubel who founded Ordination Arthrowaves with focus on traumatologic treatments 2016 in Vienna. Now in time before the ski season starts in Austria, the doctors provide tips for making the body fit for skiing. The tips are derived from a holistic view on the body (muscle strength, endurance, balance) inclusively the critical self-estimation of the own fitness based on calculations such as the impact of weather conditions respectively snow quality and the own skiing skills on the risk of injuries.

Tip selection and summary of the doctors' recommendations:

  • Start the muscle (legs and hip, arms and shoulders) strengthening programme around six weeks before skiing.
  • Train your fitness with endurance sports like running, cycling or swimming.
  • Integrate coordination exercises like standing on one feet - keyword balance, while brushing the teethes into your daily routine.
  • On the first day of the winter holidays search for an easy slope for getting again the feeling for the skis. Warm up before descending a slope; it will promote blood circulation in the muscles and prevents injuries.
  • Check the weather conditions for estimating the quality of the snow respectively for calculating for example the speed on icy slopes and the own skiing skills.
  • Make a break when the power runs out. According to statistics, most of the skiing accidents happen during the last descent into the valley when skiers are tired and unfocused.

"Pay attention to the signals of your body," is the last - and probably the most important recommendation for sports activities in general, at the tip list by Dr. Prosquill and Dr. Streubel.
