2 January 2026 ![]() From Winter Parties to the BallroomAfter the Christmas and New Year celebrations, attention in Vienna traditionally shifts to the ball season. Elegant dresses, jewellery, hairstyles and make-up become central topics again. Balls are not only social highlights, they are also cultural markers for style and craftsmanship. To show where the season is heading, Steinmetz-Bundy Privatsalon and fashion designer JC Hoerl presented a new visual series titled The Ball Edition. The photo story offers an overview of current ball trends, interpreted through hair, make-up and fashion.Shot by photographer Wolfgang Hirt and featuring model Alisa from Body & Soul agency, the series brings together Viennese ball tradition with contemporary aesthetics. According to Steinmetz-Bundy, the trends shown reflect their professional view on how classic elegance is changing for the 2026 season. Natural Elegance Instead of Big HairAs described by Steinmetz-Bundy, opulent "big hair" styles are no longer the focus. The current direction favours smaller silhouettes, natural movement and a relaxed finish. Loose textures and subtle references to the undone look play an important role, even in formal evening styling. Hair should look effortless, while still holding perfectly throughout a long night.Updos remain relevant, but they appear lighter and less constructed. Open hair is also an option, provided the cut, condition and styling are precise. The aim, as outlined by the salon, is a look that supports the wearer's personality rather than disguising it. Glass Hair, Sleek Lines and Diva MomentsOne key theme highlighted by Steinmetz-Bundy is the so-called "glass hair" effect. Intensive care, exact cutting and professional tools create an ultra-glossy surface that reflects light and adds a luxurious finish. Sleek styles are combined with soft sections or sculptural details, balancing control and ease.Another look presented in the series plays with classic diva glamour: smooth roots, a compact head shape and flowing waves or curls through the lengths. According to the trend description, shine replaces volume, and elegance comes from precision rather than excess. Make-up, provided by the Steinmetz-Bundy team, supports the hairstyles with a polished but restrained approach. Craftsmanship and Practical ExperienceSteinmetz-Bundy, long regarded as an institution for ball styling in Vienna, emphasises that craftsmanship and preparation are essential. Based on the salon's advice, hair should be freshly cut and healthy well before the event. On the ball day itself, only cleansing, care and final styling are recommended to avoid unnecessary stress on the hair. The team also shares practical experience beyond styling. For example, they suggest protecting the finished hairstyle while getting dressed, using a light silk scarf to prevent damage when pulling a gown over the head. Located vis-à-vis the Vienna State Opera, Steinmetz-Bundy Privatsalon has shaped the city's ball aesthetics for decades. The Ball Edition reflects this background, presenting trends that combine tradition, modernity and professional insight. Image: The image shows model Alisa styled in three coordinated views for the Viennese ball season. On the left and centre, a sleek updo is presented from the front and back, highlighting precise craftsmanship and a compact silhouette. The black lace dress emphasises transparency and structure. On the right, the look shifts to soft, flowing lengths styled in polished waves, paired with a sequinned evening gown in deep red and silver. Lace and sequins are key visual elements throughout the photo series, underscoring the balance between modern elegance and classic ball glamour.
